Writing Alaih Salam (عليه السلام) with Ahle Bait by Imam Bukhari

Writing
عليه السلام
with Ahle Bait by Imam Bukhari

We are living in a era where, people have stopped acquiring knowledge and started relying more on mere individual opinion/fatwa and thereby misleading innocent muslim ummah who were always been on right path.
The issue of using Alaih Salam with Ahle Bait wasn't present in the past generation as overwhelming Scholars and Imam have already used it but with passing of time certain sect have started manipulating things and showed as if such a thing never existed.
Here we are presenting you the Fatwa of one of the famous Scholars of Saudia Arabia i.e Shaykh `Abdul-`Azeez Bin Baz when asked whether Alihe Salam can be used with Ali R.A he said:

" It is not appropriate to distinguish Ali with this saying. Rather, what is legislated is that it be said in his case and the case of other Companions: Radhi Allahu Anhu (may Allaah be pleased with him), Radhi Allahu Anhum (may Allaah be pleased with them) or: Rahimahullah (may Allaah have mercy on him). This is because there is no evidence for distinguishing him by it. Likewise is the expression used by some: Karram Allahu Wajhahu (may Allaah bless his countenance), there is no evidence for using it, nor is there any reason to distinguish him by it. It is best to treat him the same as the rest of the Well-Guided Caliphs and not to apply any special words to him which are not applied to the others, when there is no evidence to support it.- [Fatawa Islamiyah Vol. 1 Page 114]

Let us divide this fatwa into two parts

A) There is no evidence, for using Alaih Salam
B) No proof to use expression like Karram Allahu Wajhahu
Before we put down our countless proofs which will destroy this batil fatwa, we want our readers to know that, We love each and every Sahaba R.A, as they are shining stars in the sky

Fatima A.S

Imam Bukhari also used 'Alaiha Salaam' for Fatima (A.S):
لما ثقل النبي ‏ ‏صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ ‏جعل يتغشاه فقالت ‏ ‏فاطمة ‏ ‏عليها السلام
In the above chain it says: ‏ ‏ ‏ ‏فاطمة ‏ ‏عليها السلام i.e from Fatima "ALAIH SALAM"
[Sahih Bukhari, Kitab al-Maghazni, Hadith 4103]

-At another place Imam Bukhari in his Sahih Bukhari mention Fatima "ALAIH SALAM"

VII: Jibril used to review the Qur'an with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace
Translation: It is reported from 'A'isha that Fatima, peace be upon her, said, "The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, confided to me, 'Jibril used to review the Qur'an with me every year, but this year he reviewed it with me twice. I only think that my time is approaching.'"
4711. Ibn 'Abbas said, "The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was the most generous of people, and he was at his most generous during the month of Ramadan because Jibril used to met him every night in the month of Ramadan until it ended. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to review the Qur'an with him. When Jibril met him, he was more generous with good than the blowing wind."

XIX: A woman removing something harmful from a person praying
498. It is related that 'Abdullah said, "Once while the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was standing in prayer at the Ka'ba, there was a group of Quraysh sitting there and one of them said, 'Do you not see this show-off? Which of you will go to so and so's butchered camel, get hold of its innards, bring them and then, when he prostrates, put them on his back?' The most wretched of them did it and when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, prostrated, he put them on his back. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, remained in prostration and they laughed until they fell over one another laughing. Someone went to Fatima, peace be upon her, who was a young girl at the time. She came running. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, remained in prostration until she removed it from him. Then she turned to them and cursed them. When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, finished the prayer, he said, 'O Allah! Punish Quraysh! O Allah, punish Quraysh! O Allah, punish Quraysh!' Then he named them: 'O Allah, punish 'Amr ibn Hisham, 'Utba ibn Rabi'a, Shayba ibn Rabi'a, al-Walid ibn 'Utba, Umayya ibn Khalaf, 'Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ayt, and 'Umara ibn al-Walid.'"
'Abdullah said, "By Allah, I saw them all lying dead on the day of Badr and then they were dragged into the well of Badr and then the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'The people of the well have been pursued by the curse.'"

LXXXIV: Wearing helmets
2754. It is related that Sahl was asked about the wound of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, on the Day of Uhud. He said, "The face of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was wounded, his front-tooth broken and his helmet was smashed on his head. Fatima, peace be upon her, washed the blood away while 'Ali held the water. When she saw that it increased the bleeding, she took a mat and burned it until it was ash and then applied it and the bleeding stopped."

VI: The evidence that the khumus is for the needs of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the poor. The preference of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, for the People of the Suffa and widows. When Fatima complained to him about grinding and milling and asked him to give her a servant from the captives, he told her to trust in Allah
2945. It is related from 'Ali, "Fatima, peace be upon her, complained of what she endured from the mill for grinding, and she heard that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had taken captives. She went to him to ask for a servant and she did not find him. She mentioned it to 'A'isha. When the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came, 'A'isha mentioned that to him. He came to him when we had gone to bed and we went to get up and he said, 'Stay where you are' until I felt the coolness of his feet on my chest. He said, 'Shall I indicate to you two what is better than what you asked for? When you go to bed, say "Allah is greater" thirty-four times, "Praise be to Allah" thirty-three times, and "Glory be to Allah" thirty-three times. That is better for you than what you asked for.'"

XX: Throwing the corpses of idolaters into a well and not taking any price for them
3014. It is related that 'Abdullah said, "While the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was in prostration, surrounded by some of the idolaters of Quraysh, 'Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ayt brought the foetal membrance of a young camel and threw it on the back of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He did not raise his head until Fatima peace be upon her came and removed it from his back. Then he pronounced an invocation against those who had done that. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'O Allah! Destroy the council of Quraysh! O Allah, destroy Abu Jahl ibn Hisham, 'Utba ibn Rabi'a, Shayba ibn Rabi'a, 'Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ayt, and Umayya ibn Khalaf! (or and Ubayy ibn Khalaf)' I saw them killed on the day of Badr and they were thrown into the well, except for Umayya or Ubayy. He was a fat man and when they dragged him, his joints separated before he was thrown into the well."

XX: The wounds which the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, received on the Day of Uhud
3847. It is related that Sahl ibn Sa'd was asked about the wound of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, on the Day of Uhud. He said, "By Allah, I know who washed the face of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and who poured the water and with what he was treated." He said, "Fatima, peace be upon her, washed the blood away while 'Ali poured the water from a shield. When she saw that it increased the bleeding, she took a piece of mat and burned it and then applied it and the bleeding stopped. That day his front-tooth broken and his face was injured, and his helmet was smashed on his head."

4170. It is related that 'Aisha said, O The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, summonedFatima, peace be upon her, in his final illness. He confided something to her and she wept. Then he called her and confided something to her and she laughed. We asked her about that and she said, 'She confided him that he would die in the illness in which he died and so I wept. Then he confided to me and informed me that I would be the first of his family to follow him and I laughed.'"

5047. It is related from 'Ali ibn Abi Talib that Fatima, peace be upon her, went to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to ask him for a servant. He said, "Shall I tell you what is better for you than that? When you go to sleep, say 'Glory be to Allah' thirty-three times, 'Praise be to Allah,' thirty-three times, and 'Allah is greater' thirty-four times." (Sufyan said, "One of them is thirty-four.") 5924. Abu Hazim related that Sahl ibn Sa'd said, "There was no name which 'Ali loved more than Abu Turab. He used to be happy when he was called that. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, went to Fatima's Peace Be Upon Her house and did not find 'Ali at home. He said, 'Where is your cousin?' She said, 'We had a difference of opinion and he got angry with me and went out. He did not take his mid-day nap here with me.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to someone, 'See where he is.' He came back and said, 'Messenger of Allah, he is sleeping in the mosque.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, went and found 'Ali lying there. His cloak had fallen from on top of him and had become covered with dust. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, began to dust it off, saying, 'Get up, Abu Turab (Dusty one)! Get up, Abu Turab!'"

XLIII. Someone who has a private conversation in front of the people and the one who did not disclose the secret of his companions but discloses it when he has died
5928. Masruq related that 'A'isha, the Umm al-Mu'minin, said, "We, the wives of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, were all with him, and none of us had left when Fatima, peace be upon her, came walking. By Allah, her gait was much like that of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. When he saw her, he welcomed her and said, 'Welcome, my daughter!' and then he had her sit to his right or to his left and then she confided something to her and she wept profusely. When he saw her sorrow, he confided something else to her and she laughed. I was the only one of his wives who said to her, 'The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, singled you out for a secret from among us and then you wept." When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, got up and left, I asked her, 'What did he confide to you?' She said, 'I will not divulge the secret of the Messenger of Allah.' When he died, I said to her, 'I insist? on you by what right I have on you to tell me.; She said, 'Now I will do it.' She told me and said, 'As for what he confided to me the first time, he told him that Jibril used to present the Qur'an to him once a year. He said, "This year, he has presented it to me twice. I only think that my time is approaching. Fear Allah and be steadfast. I am an excellent predecessor for you."' She said, 'Then I wept as you say. When he saw my distress, he confided to me a second time and said, "Fatima, are you not pleased that you will be the mistress of the believing women or the mistress of the women of this community?'"

Translation:  Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As: We buried a deceased person in the company of the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him). When we had finished, the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) returned and we also returned with him. When he approached his door, he stopped, and we saw a woman coming towards him. He (the narrator) said: I think he recognized her. When she went away, we came to know that she was Fatimah(A.S) The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said to her: What brought you out of your house, Fatimah? She replied: I came to the people of this house, Apostle of Allah, and I showed pity and expressed my condolences to them for their deceased relation. The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: You might have gone to the graveyard with them.    She replied: I seek refuge in Allah! I heard you referring to what you mentioned. He said: If you had gone to the graveyard...He then mentioned severe words about it. I then asked Rabi'ah (a narrator of this tradition) about al-kuda (stony land). He replied: I think it means the graves.

Translation: Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: I never saw anyone more like the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) in respect of gravity, calm deportment, pleasant disposition - according to al-Hasan's version: in respect of talk and speech. Al-Hasan did not mention gravity, calm deportment, pleasant disposition - than Fatimah, may Allah honour her face. When she came to visit him (the Prophet) he got up to (welcome) her, took her by the hand, kissed her and made her sit where he was sitting; and when he went to visit her, she got up to (welcome) him, took him by the hand, kissed him, and made him sit where she was sitting.  (Book 41, Hadith 5198, Sunan Abu Dawood)

We Ahlus Sunnah, doesn't go to extreme as we accept both R.A and A.S, for Ahle Bait but if someone start rejecting the truth then we don't leave them either.
Now, if some other sect start accusing, that First two Rightly guided Caliph's have been left out then, indeed some scholars have used   Alaih Salam with Blessed Sahaba like Hazarath Abu Bakr As Siddiq and Hazarath Umar In “Fadha’il As-Sahaba” by Darqutni  we find “Alaihi Salam” many times after the name of Abu Bakr, Umar

Umar Alaih salam

Q:Did the Salaf say:
كرم الله وجهه
('Allah ta’ala Ennoble his Face')
When Sayyidina ‘Ali was mentioned?

While researching about a topic that some of our "brothers" deem bida’, I came across several fatawa which claimed there was no basis for the above expression nor did the Salaf use it; at first I came upon the expression in Sharh us Shamail of Mulla ‘Ali, and I wondered if it was Mulla ‘Ali who wrote it or was it from Imam Tirmidhi himself as the expression was inside parenthesis giving the impression that it was the original text of  Shamail by Imam Tirmidhi.

And so my findings led me to the following, suffice it to say the Salaf would say the above expression for Sayyidina ‘Ali (Allah ta’ala be pleased with him) and so the argument that the Salaf didn’t use it is incorrect, to say the least.

For surprises me is not only the flinging of the word bida’, but the expression is used in the hadith works which are widely distributed and studied, so is there any excuse for claiming it’s bida’?

1- Musnad of Imam Ahmed, hadith number 15941, regarding the hadith of Sayyidina ‘Ali receiving the flag from Sayyiduna Muhammed (peace be upon him), Imam Ahmed records in his work:

‏فقال علي بن أبي طالب كرم الله وجهه

2- Sunan Nasai, hadith number 4348, “on the authority of Abi ‘Ubayd Mawla Ibn ‘Awf he said, “I saw ‘Ali bin Abi Talib, Allah ta’ala ennoble his face, on the day of ‘Id”. From the reading of this narration, it seems the Tabi’, Mawla ibn ‘Awf, is saying ‘May Allah ta’ala ennoble his face’.
3- Sunan Nasai, hadith number 5518, “Malik bin ‘Umayr narrated to me, he said, Sa’sa’ said to ‘Ali bin Abi Talib, Allah ta’ala ennoble his face,”.
4- Sunan Nasai’, hadith number 825, “(‘Ubaydillah bin ‘Abdillah said) ‘Ibn ‘Abbas said, “do you know the name of the man who was with al-‘Abbas?” I said, “No”, he said (‘Ibn Abbas) Ali, Allah ta’ala ennoble his face.”
5- Sunan Nasai’, hadith number 5533, “on the authority of al-Harith bin Suwayd, on the authority of ‘Ali, Allah ta’ala ennoble his face, on the Authority of an-Nabi (peace be upon him)…”
6- Musnad Imam Ahmed, hadith number 1775, “Isma’il narrated to us, Ayyub narrated to us, on the authority of ‘Ikramah, that ‘Ali set fire a group of people…that (Sayyidina Ibn ‘Abbas’s criticism) reached ‘Ali, Allah ta’ala ennoble his face…”

Link of Sunan an-Nasai’: Here

As for the argument that Shia’hs started this expression, they who claim this have to prove it, since the above clearly shows that the Tabi’in would say it, and number 4 gives the impression that a Sahabi, Sayyidina ‘Ibn ‘Abbas, said it

As for the reason why the Ahlus Sunnah said the above phrase, the reason is because the Khawarij would say ‘May his face be blackened’, and in response to this Ahlus Sunnah said:
كرم الله وجهه  ( ‘May Allah ta’ala ennoble his face’)
